Japanese Children's Day celebration

Come and celebrate Japanese Children’s Day (Kodomo No Hi) at the Youth Arts & Recreation Centre in Hobart! You’ll find a free fun-filled day inspired by Japanese culture and customs, with activities for all ages to enjoy.

  • Climb the Kumundar Gujo jungle gym, crafted using traditional Japanese woodworking
  • Get lost in a Japanese storybook on the Wooden Boat Festival’s travelling book barge
  • Meet Yai-chan, the adorable bonito fish mascot from Hobart's sister city Yaizu
  • Learn how to fold origami
  • Add your own dot to a giant community-made koinobori (carp streamer)
  • Taste delicious Japanese treats
  • Explore stunning arts, crafts and cultural displays
Children's Day is a public holiday in Japan and is all about wishing children strength, resilience, health and happiness.

This event is supported by City of Hobart's Youth Arts & Recreation Centre, the Australian Wooden Boat Festival and the Australia-Japan Society of Tasmania.
