Cookalong - live from Japan!

Join the Australia-Japan Society of Tasmania from your own kitchen as we link to Japan for a live cooking class. 

Learn how to prepare Agedashi Tofu following easy step-by-step instructions by a Japanese home cook, Ikuko Furumi. 

You are invited to cook along with Ikuko in your own kitchen, using ingredients that are readily available at the supermarket. You can ask questions along the way and share a delicious meal at the end. 

The event will be held on Sunday 31 March 2020 5pm (Tassie time), with registrations closing on Thursday 28 May 2020. 

Only $10 for members and $15 for non-members.

Please note that this is an online event only and a separate link will be emailed to you closer to the date and once registered.  To participate you will need to have access to a device capable of joining a zoom meeting. 


Agedashi tofu ingredients:

  • 1 block tofu (about 350g)
  • Medium firm (Momen) tofu is better than silken (Kinu) tofu.
  • 5 Tbsp Potato starch (or corn starch or flour)
  • some cooking oil
  • 1 cup Dashi soup stock
  • 2 Tbsp Japanese Mirin (rice wine)
  • 2 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 1/2 stalk spring onion
  • 1 piece of ginger (option)

1 cup Dashi (Japanese soup stock) ingredients:

  • 1 Tsp powdered bonito soup stock and 1 cup of water
  • or for vegetarian option use 1 Tsp powdered kelp (kombu) dashi with 1 cup water, or 1 cup shiitake mushroom dashi soup (use about 2 dried whole shiitake for 1 cup of stock)
  • 1 Tsp sugar
  • 1 Tbsp tomato juice
